A small school with big ambition!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our school. Located on the fringe of Walsall Town Centre, Walsall Studio School is the first and only Studio School in the Black Country. Specialising in creative industry qualifications, students travel from across Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Birmingham and Wolverhampton to access our unique offer.
As Principal of Walsall Studio School, I feel privileged to lead a school which prides itself on providing the highest standard of education for all students, regardless of their background. Our aspiration for all students is threefold. Firstly, we expect all students to be challenged academically to achieve ‘their best’. Secondly, by providing students with a first-class vocational curriculum, we seek to transform students into ‘young creative professionals’. Thirdly, and most importantly, through ongoing guidance and coaching, all students are guaranteed to undertake a journey of personal growth and development that prepares them well for life.
Walsall Studio School is a 14-19 school; students apply to join our school at the beginning of Year 10 (to follow our Key Stage 4 curriculum) or Year 12 (to study one of our specialist Key Stage 5 vocational pathways). Both our Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 curriculums provide students with an opportunity to follow personalised and specialist vocational learning pathways. It is our ambition that all students joining us in Year 10 remain with us to complete a full four-year journey that prepares them well for their next stage of learning, whether that be a university, a conservatoire or an apprenticeship. It is noteworthy to mention that since our inception in 2013 we have had an outstanding record in supporting students to secure their first, and often top-performing, first choice option at the end of Key Stage 5 in their field of expertise.
Our Key Stage 4 programme of study commences in Year 10, and whilst our comprehensive range of creative industry based qualifications (including; performing arts, dance, music, media/digital and enterprise) will be the qualification of choice for most of our students, our curriculum remains comprehensive and inclusive. We are most certainly not driven by politics but by doing the right thing for our young people and local community.
In Key Stage 5, students undertake a specialist vocational pathway. For all students, particularly our internal progression students, this provides an opportunity to build on the in-demand skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to continue their studies and step easily into the fast-growing creative industries. Nicola Mendelsohn, Industry Chair of Creative Industry Council, highlights our ambition;
“British creativity is world-renowned across a plethora of disciplines – from TV and film to media and advertising, from gaming and visual effects to music and art…And indeed, it’s thrilling to see that towns like Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Luton and Manchester are driving growth, entrepreneurship and innovation across the UK. These creative powerhouses are creating new jobs weekly and help paving the way to reach one million new creative jobs by 2030.”
Our staff body is a dedicated team of professionals, all of whom play their part to ensure students are happy, safe and successful. Our approach to learning is based upon traditional values of hard work, self-discipline and respect, and we seek every opportunity to reward Motivation, Aspiration, Grit, Independence and Collaboration across our school. Alongside this we provide an excellent standard of pastoral care to ensure that students are well looked after and cared for.
We understand and recognise the enormous role that our parents and carers play in realising the true potential of all of our young people. Therefore, we will always seek to work in close partnership with you to support not only the young people who attend our school but also to support, when appropriate, the entire family unit.
If you would like to find out more about our school or would like to arrange an appointment to visit our facilities so that you can see for yourself the exceptional work that is taking place, then please contact us. We look forward to meeting you.
